Choosing Your Wedding Flowers

Trends

Since your floral selections will be beautiful focal points of both the ceremony and reception, choosing what you will use is often difficult. Florist Emily Neubauer, owner of Belle Fiori on Milwaukee’s trendy East Side, offers some suggestions on how to start the flower-picking process.

“We start by asking the date that the wedding will be taking place, and the color fabric of the bridesmaids’ dresses," she says. "These answers will help us find the seasonal color tone necessary, and we can go forward from there.” Determining a budget allowance for flowers narrows the selection process even further. She stresses that out-of-season does not mean unavailable, but it will increase the cost quite a bit.

“Recently I had a wedding that requested tulips in August," says Neubauer. "The cost was about three times what it would have been in the springtime, but for the bride it was worth it because tulips had a sentimental value to her family that was worth the extra investment. But flowers that are in season will have the fullest and most lush bouquets.”

Year-round offerings include roses and gerbera daisies, both of which are very popular and come in a variety of colors. Winter weddings often use deep rich tones and seasonal selections, such as amaryllis, with foliage such as ivy and holly, while sunnier and brighter selections are available for summer bouquets.
