Q. My fiancé and I want to give out handmade truffles as favors. How do we choose something for a large and diverse guest list?

A. There’s an infamous quip, “Nine in 10 people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies.” Odds are your guests will love receiving a small gift of chocolate, but keep some basic guidelines in mind.

Rebecca Flynn, owner of Eau Claire’s Obsession Chocolates, recommends choosing three truffle flavors if your guest list is 75 to 100 people; three to five flavors for 100 to 200; and five to seven flavors if you’ve invited more than 200. Choose flavors that most pique your palate. Flynn suggests labeling each truffle (especially exotic flavors) so guests can trade for their favorites. “You see them switching and trading,” says Flynn. “It’s a little game, and they get exactly what they want.”

Labels are especially important for truffles that contain alcohol, she adds, as it’s important to be mindful of guests who are underage, pregnant or recovering from substance issues.
