Doughnuts are quickly moving from the bakery case to the head table.

“I see doughnuts as the new cupcake,” says Ken Heil, co-owner of Waukesha’s Sweet Perfections Bake Shoppe. Just a month after debuting their gourmet doughnuts, they were doing consults with doughnut-desiring couples. Their new hot flavor? The creampuff doughnut.

River Falls bride Ali Hoyer was hooked by the trend, serving doughnuts at her August 2013 wedding alongside banana cream pies, cheesecake, petits fours and other goodies. “I love weddings that are personal to the couple, and that’s what we tried to do at our wedding. Plus, who doesn’t love a doughnut?” says Hoyer.

Since doughnuts are self-serve, couples can offer a wide variety of flavors and designs for their guests. “The doughnut world is your playground!” says Caitlin Suemnicht, managing partner of Madison’s Bassett Street Brunch Club. “It’s really no more expensive or labor-intensive for us to do a variety of flavors, so pick the ones that appeal to you, or suit the theme of your wedding or the season.”
