If I even just think about Nirvana, I am transported to my youth. Like most people, the first song I ever heard was "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and while it is not even close to my favorite song, it always flashes me back to a very specific moment in time. What song of your youth gives you a vivid flashback?⠀ ......⠀ The first chords of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” create me to involuntarily move; I rock forward and back ever so slightly and I’m instantly taken back to 9-year-old Tiffany, sitting on the floor of the living room while my mom vacuumed the steps to the upstairs. I was watching MTV (when they played music and not “I’m 16 and have 20 babies” shows). There was this band with this red-haired vocalist flailing himself all over the stage singing words I couldn’t quite make out. The pure chaos of the performance and loud rebel yells of this guy mesmerized me. I knew my mom wouldn’t approve so as soon as I heard the vacuum stop, I changed the station. What had I just seen? What had I just heard? This was pre-internet so I couldn’t just Google “red hair guitarist singer flailing.” I tried to watch MTV as often as I could to find him. The next time I saw that fascinating man, it was in the upper right-hand corner of a MTV News broadcast (does that still exist?) and it had said he was dead. I felt jipped. I had felt a tug to this mess of a man like I had never felt before. It was that day in 1994 that I listened to that pull and immersed myself into a genre of music no one in my family indulged in or understood. It was the moment that I embraced that feeling of not fitting in because this amazing artist obviously didn’t fit in and I would soon learn that he had a community of fans that felt the same way.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #avenue81photo #heyheyhellomay #milwaukeewedding #babetowncollective #wisconsinweddingphotography #milwaukeeweddingphotography #milwaukeeweddingphotographer #authenticlovemag #huffpostido ##wisconsinbride #wibride #wisconsinweddingphotographer #milwaukeephotographer #belovedstories #dirtybootsandmessyhair #loveandwildhearts #radlovestories #momentsovermountains #alternativewedding #alternativebride #nirvana #flashback #engagementphotographe
