Eco-friendly Wedding Flowers

Top Shelf Weddings and Events on making sure your big-day blooms are sustainable.

Q. I want to have centerpieces that are more eco-friendly than cut flowers. What are some “green” alternatives?

A. “Groupings of potted plants—trees, vegetables, flowers, succulents—at various heights and with different textures can be beautiful,” says Angela Dupont, owner and lead consultant at Top Shelf Weddings and Events in Madison. Couples can send guests home with the plants as a favor, or take them home themselves and plant them in their yard.

Repurposing a collection of items from thrift stores can also be a creative and eco-friendly way to add interest. “I had one couple who topped their tables with their collection of antique model cars,” Dupont says. “Guests were directed to the pink Cadillac table, the Mustang table. The cars meant something to the couple and were items they already owned.”

Other ideas include filling glass vases with organic materials like legumes, beans or coffee beans. Bamboo or twig baskets filled with local apples can also make pretty centerpiece for a fall wedding.
