Wisconsin Wedding Trends Worth Rethinking

From reception speeches and wedding favors to beauty timelines and portrait sessions, Wisconsin wedding professionals share which traditions couples may want to reconsider.

Wedding trends can be a great source of inspiration, but they can also create pressure to fit every expected moment into one already very full day. The most memorable weddings are often the ones where couples decide what deserves their time, attention and budget, then let go of the rest.

We asked Wisconsin wedding professionals which traditions and trends they’d encourage couples to rethink, and what they suggest doing instead.

Design the Celebration Around the Experience

For Karin Hurley, Sales Manager at Saz’s Hospitality Group, couples don’t need to build their wedding around a traditional checklist or rigid timeline. “Some of the most memorable celebrations we see happen when couples choose a venue and catering experience that truly reflect who they are,” Hurley says.

That might mean reconsidering a traditional plated dinner, adjusting the flow of the reception or choosing a service style that encourages guests to mingle. She also recommends looking for venues with character and flexibility so the setting itself becomes part of the celebration. Rather than trying to fit every expected element into the day, Hurley encourages couples to focus on what will make guests feel genuinely cared for from arrival through the final dance. “Your wedding should feel like you, not like a template.”

Schedule Wedding Portraits for Another Day

For Kate Johnson, Owner of The Bridal Beauty Team, one of the most freeing changes couples can make is separating some of their wedding portraits from the wedding day itself. Johnson has seen couples get dressed again a few days after the wedding and spend a relaxed few hours with their photographer without a ceremony start time, waiting guests or reception timeline to worry about. “They can visit all the locations they really wanted, take their time getting the shots they dreamed about, and actually enjoy the experience together,” she says.

A separate portrait session can also create more flexibility from a beauty perspective. The bride might choose a softer version of her wedding look, try a different hairstyle or makeup direction, or worry less about wind, weather and keeping the dress pristine. Couples still get the emotion and candid moments of the wedding day, but they also gain the freedom to create more editorial portraits without trying to squeeze everything into an already packed schedule.

Build Breathing Room Into the Wedding Morning

Jennifer Janssen of JJ Bridal Artistry would love couples to rethink wedding mornings that are scheduled down to the minute. “Hair and makeup shouldn’t feel like an assembly line,” Janssen says. “We’re seeing increasingly tight beauty timelines because couples are trying to squeeze in more photos, first looks and pre-ceremony moments.”

After working through hundreds of wedding mornings, she has found that even a little extra breathing room can change the tone of the entire day. “Build in a buffer. Let your beauty team create a realistic schedule. Give the bride time to actually enjoy getting ready instead of jumping out of the makeup chair and immediately racing into a dress.” For Janssen, efficiency matters, but ease matters too. “The best wedding mornings aren’t the fastest ones. They’re the ones that feel effortless.”

Choose Favors Guests Will Actually Enjoy

For Summer Rich of Gift & Co by Summer, wedding gifting should feel thoughtful, not obligatory. “One wedding trend I’d love to see couples rethink is gifting simply because they feel like they’re supposed to,” Rich says.

Instead of selecting a favor simply to check it off the list, she encourages couples to ask whether guests will genuinely enjoy, use or remember it. That could mean a locally made treat, something useful during the wedding weekend or a flavor that connects guests to the couple or destination. “The best wedding gifting doesn’t have to be over the top, but it should feel personal,” Rich says. After guests have traveled to celebrate, even a bottle of water, favorite snack or thoughtfully chosen welcome item can make an impact. “It can feel like the first welcome hug of the weekend, and that’s a pretty special way to start the celebration.”

Shorten the Speech List

A heartfelt toast can be one of the most memorable moments of a reception, but David Porto of Blue Plate Catering encourages couples to be selective about how many people take the microphone. “It's great to highlight a few key people, and if the list grows too big, it can end up throwing off the rhythm of the entire evening,” Porto says.

At one recent wedding, speeches lasted more than 50 minutes. With limited time to connect with family and friends on the wedding day, lengthy toasts can significantly affect the flow of the celebration. Keeping the list focused allows the most meaningful speeches to stand out while leaving more room for dinner, conversation and time together.

Leave the Party on a High Note

A packed dance floor is hard to beat, but Jaffe Wojcik and Kacie Vandiver of Graceful Events would love to see couples reconsider the idea that the only successful wedding is one that lasts until the lights come on. “There’s something delightfully nostalgic about leaving the party while it’s still a party,” they say.

They suggest bringing back the grand getaway. Couples can change into a fabulous departure look, hop into a vintage car and make their exit while the celebration is still buzzing. “Drive off to cheers from your favorite people while you still have enough energy for the grand finale,” they say. “Bring back the grand getaway!”

Ultimately, rethinking a wedding trend doesn’t mean rejecting tradition. It means deciding which moments actually enhance the celebration and creating enough space to enjoy them.
