Black and White Wedding Cakes

{1} This feathered, four-tier confection is a new take on a classic scroll-patterned cake, perfect for a vintage-loving bride. Baker Aggie Purcell of Aggie’s Cakes and Pastries encourages couples to make the cake all about them. She hand-drew the design before adding the striking pearl and feather embellishments. With polka dots, stripes and scrolling, this cake catches the eye while the homemade buttercream frosting and fresh (never frozen) filling tantalizes the tastebuds.

{2} Inspired by a lace doily owned by a bride’s grandmother, this design by Bridal Cakes by Ann is a modern take on a more traditional damask pattern. Sugar-paste flowers replicating opulent magnolia blossoms top this simple yet stunning masterpiece. With fondant and buttercream options, owner Ann Byrd suggests her signature flavor of white and chocolate cake with raspberry mousse.

{3} Created by owner Jen Stephanie of Bettersweet Bakery, this cake features smooth ribbons of different widths, layered black and white swirls, and sugar balls in different textures. The bottom layer of ribbon can be inscribed with words like “cherish,” “love” or “joy.” Stephanie recommends red velvet cake inside, or a fresh orange cake with white-chocolate lavender filling—either are sure to delight your guests.

{4} Three-dimensional flowers created from layers of black and white gumpaste petals with a fondant pearl center perch atop this hexagonal modern beauty. Golden Gourmet owner Nancy Bunkelman Kreil crisscrossed the cake for a sharp, distinctive look. She offers regular and classic French buttercream but is best known for her tasty rolled fondant, made in-house.

{5} This chic square cake makes a bold statement in black, with its detailed sugar flowers and personalized monogram. Inspired by fabrics and textiles, Peter Sciortino's Bakery pastry chef Emilia Orlando used luster dust and impressions to create a silk and brocade effect on the flowers. While flavors such as tuxedo cake with almond amaretto mousse and tres leches are very popular, the bakery also offers unique options like salted caramel and lavender cake.

{6} For this playful yet sophisticated cake, owner Irina Yundov of Simma’s Bakery used hand-brushed petals and painted-on white fondant flowers, embellished with icing and accented with silver beads. This fashion-forward cake could be paired with Simma’s award-winning combination of cheesecake and a layer of chocolate cake with raspberry filling, covered with a blanket of chocolate ganache.
