Choreographed First Dances

Q. I took dance lessons for years growing up, and my fiancé and I have taken a few salsa-dancing classes together. When we got engaged nine months ago, we thought we’d choreograph our first dance together, but life has been much busier than we expected and we haven’t found the time. Now we’re two months away from the wedding and I’m starting to get worried. What should I do?

A. In theory, it was a great idea to plan the choreography of your first dance. In reality, you’re like many engaged couples who find that the months leading up to their wedding are filled with so many tasks that they don’t always have time to follow through on their ideas. Lucky for you, there’s a simple and easy solution: Hire a dance teacher.

Instructors like Connie Reeves from Topline Studio and East Towne Ballrooms in Milwaukee can help you create a first dance routine that reflects your personal style. “Every couple is different; some want to learn a few steps that go with a song, others want to learn several dances so they can dance the entire night, and a few want their first dance completely choreographed,” says Reeves. “Instructors can help the couple figure out the best fit for them. Usually after a lesson or two they have a good idea of their timeline and what they feel they can accomplish.” Contact your nearest dance studio, slip on your dancing shoes and enjoy dancing with your fiancé while someone else does the choreography work.
