Charitable Wedding Donations

You have all you need, but others don't. How to ask guests to donate to charity and not your kitchen clutter.

Q. My fiancé and I don't want presents for our wedding; we'd like people to donate to our favorite charity instead. Is there any way to let them know? Can we just include this information in our invitation?

A. It's always considered bad form to include any meniton of gifts on your invitation. While presents are the tradition and the norm, they should never be expected. In fact, it's becoming more popular for couples to avoid the gift-giving routine. This is fine, but the only way to encourage charitable donations in lieu of gifts is to do it informally, via word of mouth. Tell your family and close friends about your preferences (including contact info for the specific charity) and ask them to pass the information on to anyone who asks.
